The Spitfire was the last defense to the German war machine in the early days of World War 2.  The elegant design with smooth rounded wings made the difference in the air war over England, a war later to become known as the Battle of Britain.  This battle began when a sea of German planes attacked the small island nation.  The Spitfire held back this tide and became a legend in the process.
